AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS NATURALLY takes a stringent stand against blanket vaccination policies.  With the exception of the Rabies Vaccine, [since it is required by law] we vigorously recommend a natural rearing diet and procedures to ensure a sound animal with a strong immune system. 

Vaccines, and in particular - the ROUTINE OVER-vaccination of people and animals - is responsible for  chronic ailments and a compromised immune system in its recipient.  Vaccines in  CHILDREN, ARE responsible for Autism, Allergies, ADHD and more.  More than 10 years ago the venerable British medical journal, 'The Lancet' published a study which associated the annual flu shot with Alzheimer's disease.

In animals, cancerous lesions are found in the site of the vaccine injection on the animals skin, and one of my animals became severely afflicted by allergies after a Bordatella vaccination, administered without my permission.

As a rule, we ONLY ever vaccinate our dogs against Rabies, as required by law.  And as a rule, our dogs live long and healthy lives.

To build a strong immune system, a dog - who is a carnivore - must have a minimal though sufficient diet that is rich in protein from raw meat [halal and kosher or organic beef is best for those of you who are rue to shoot rabbits.] two to three times a week.  BARRING this, these meat feedings might be replaced by a can or two of  cheap oily sardines. Then supplement with a high quality dry food in limited quantities.

OVERFEEDING is the number one cause of disease and early demise in living organisms, including people and animals.

In selecting a dog food, avoid grocery store varieties containing  what is called 'meat by products' which is a coverall name for ingredients added to dog food which are unfit for human  consumption.  These 'by product' might be diseased meat parts, chicken feet, feathers and any protein product regardless of its food value, to 'bump up the overall protein listing' on the package. These 'products' are cooked to death and then supplemented with artificial vitamins and minerals to give the food package an ingredient listing that reads well.  NOTE that just because protein is listed on the package in certain quantities, DOES NOT mean it is digestible or of quality.

Dogs are NOT CEREAL eaters!   They do not subsist well on corn and wheat and cracker products.  If you MUST feed dry food there are any number of excellent wholistic formulas which contain REAL meat, and either rice or potato flours.  Neither do dogs stay healthy, any more than people do, eating sugar and highly processed foods.  The grocery store is FULL of 'phony' - looks like - tastes like - smells like meat or cheese [but it's neither] except it is cooked up with color, flavor, preservatives and sugar to boot but 'NO FAT'!! Yes, the boxes read 'Fat Free!' How funny.  We now think our animals need to avoid fat in order to stay trim, yet besides the fact that it is the sugar in the American diet, that is OMNI present in processed foods, which are keeping the population portly, dogs actually need fat!  Just like we do, or we can't feel satiated nor can we process fat soluble vitamins!

If a dog is being fed well, and is dining 4 times a week or more on a quality dry food, then choose your dog snacks and crackers that have a minimal amount of ingredients and NO vitamins!  You CAN overfeed supplements to animals, just as you can do so for yourself.   Too high quantities of fat soluble vitamins such as E, A & K, can be toxic and dangerous to the liver and other organs.

In summary, the rearing and maintenance of a healthy long lived happy animal, is not complicated, illegal or expensive.  And you will wind up over time with a happier animal, a better relationship and lower vet bills!

The diligent owner of an animal [or parent of a child] should take the time to examine 'common wisdom' and evaluate it against subsequent results.  There is a vast amount of online information available to the willing researcher.
